There’s a lot that goes into a bathroom remodel. You have to think about layouts, color schemes, bathtubs, showers, toilets, flooring, plumbing, electrical, storage space, countertops, sinks, faucets, linens, and more. It’s enough to make your head spin. So how do you choose which elements to invest in? We’ve done the heavy lifting and figured out exactly which aspects of your bathroom remodel you should splurge on, as well as a few elements that you can be more budget friendly with.

Be Sure to Splurge

The two biggest things that you should put your money into during a remodel are plumbing/electrical work and cabinetry.

Why?

Because you want them done right. If you skimp on plumbing and electrical work in the beginning, you could be looking at some serious issues down the road. Making sure that all of the work that you need done in this area is being handled by a masterful professional can give you peace of mind, as well as ensure that your bathroom with be in tip top condition for years to come.

Cabinetry is fairly similar. In most bathrooms, the vanity is a big focal point in the room. So if you’re taking the opportunity to get new cabinets, you want them to look good and stay that way. Additionally, materials like granite and quartz for countertops have a huge payoff in increasing the overall value of your home, even if the upfront material cost is pretty pricey.

Safe to Save

Now that we’ve covered a few areas that you should invest it, we can talk more about the areas where it’s ok to save a little extra on. Not every aspect of your bathroom remodel needs to feature the most premium materials. These days, you can find some beautiful and durable materials for a fraction of the cost of more premium pieces. You just need to know what to look for.

Flooring is an excellent example of this. More and more, we’re seeing high-quality flooring materials, whether it’s tile or water-resistant hardwood, at a mid-range price point. Of course, you’re always going to want to do some research on a particular product before making a firm decision, but as long as you’ve done your homework, you can end up saving quite a bit of money without making any sacrifices.

Another area that you can definitely save your pennies on are toilets, and to an extent, fixtures in general. Often, these pieces don’t have many unique design differences, so the average model is fairly cost-effective. Now of course, this is subject to change if you want all the bells and whistles, but how many of those do you really want on a toilet? A basic toilet can run you between $130-300, so it’s up to you how budget-friendly you’d like to go.

Your budget can fluctuate quite a bit when remodeling your bathroom, especially when there are so many components to consider. But having an idea about which areas it’s ok to save versus splurge on can help you plan out and settle on a firm budget that you’re comfortable with.
