A home remodel project can be stressful. After all, it’s not every day that your entire house gets taken over by a construction project.

But, it’s also exciting. And the more prepared you are, the easier the project comes together.

That’s why we’ve outlined this guide to preparing for a home remodel. These tips should help you understand what to do before your home renovation and make the whole process a lot easier for you and your family.

Prepare Yourself Mentally

Before you do anything else, it’s important to get yourself into the right mindset. If you’re not ready to have your house taken over by contractors, the remodel process is a lot more stressful.

Remember, a home renovation is messy. The walls come down. Dust flies and there are tools in your home.

This can be alarming for some folks, who just want to have their house back to normal. We always do our best to keep things nice and tidy by utilizing the proper dust protection. But, there are occasional surprises.

So, accepting the fact that your home will be less-than-spotless is a crucial step in preparing for a home remodel.

Child-Proof (and Pet-Proof) the Construction Zone

Whether you’re getting a kitchen remodel, a bathroom remodel, or an entire home renovation, it’s important to make sure that your children and pets are safe.

So, whichever room is being renovated, it’s important to take the proper precautions.

If you have infants, toddlers or pets, you may want to take them out of the house or to another floor during construction. If you’re unable to do so, get some baby gates to ensure that they don’t enter the construction space.

When it comes to small children, talk to them beforehand. Let them know that they can’t be around the construction site when the contractors are working.

If your children do happen to wander into the site, the contractors will probably ask you to take them out of the room. If that happens, please don’t be offended. It’s just our way of keeping everyone safe.

Protect Your Furniture

If you have anything valuable in your home, put it somewhere safe. Take your framed photos off the wall. Move any vases or other breakables to a safe location. You can even move your furniture out of the room to save time if you’d like.

Some homeowners prefer to rent a storage unit during their renovation but that’s not necessary for everyone. It’s perfectly fine to keep your belongings around as long as they’re in a safe place.

If you need us to move your furniture, we’re perfectly happy to do so. If that’s not possible, we’ll wrap everything in plastic to ensure that nothing gets damaged or stained.
